Scientists have recommended consumption of specific proportions of each type of foods a day. Among the reasons advanced for the suggestion include maintenance of healthy lives and avoidance of dietary associated diseases. Scientific discovery has proven that some types of fats are essential to health and are important in reduction of risk to cardiovascular diseases (Willett & Stampfer, 2003).

food pyramid

Further evidence has pointed to the fact that heavy consumption of carbohydrates is dangerous to ones health. The idea of the scientist is to promote good health through intake of well balanced diets in people. The USDA pyramid that emphasized on intake of complex carbohydrates was found to be heavily flawed as it relied on outdated science. The healthy eating habit pyramid today emphasizes on daily exercise and weight control (Harvard School of pubic health, n.d.).
Consumption in certain amount of each type of food per day enables one to eat a well balanced diet and to avoid excessive intake of carbohydrates and fats. Excessive consumption of these could be detrimental to ones health by exposing one to the risk of cardiovascular diseases. This kind of consumption has for a long time been blamed on the current incidences of obesity in the American population. This is the argument behind consumption of a portion of each part a day.
The idea is also geared towards promotion of less consumed foods which include fruits, low fat foods, non fat dairy, green vegetables, and whole grain food. This will go along way towards improving the heaths of people besides reducing the risk to cardiovascular disease and other dietary disorders.
These allotments are designed by USDA and HHS to protect the health of Americans by suggesting the best diet combinations needed for health life. They also aim at assisting people to make informed dietary choices in consumption. The Harvard school of public health has also been making its own contribution in designing of the allotments. Its purpose is to research into the best dietary habits for the benefit of the public and to disseminate the information to the public.

One of the greatest joys that I believe life has to offer is that of marriage, children and family. Unfortunately, the aspect of having a child has been one that I and my husband have been dealt a cruel hand with. About thirteen years ago I was diagnosed with Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome, otherwise known as Stein Levinthal Disease (named for the physicians who discovered the condition). I know that there are those who aren’t quite sure what Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome is so let me explain it.

Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome is a condition in women that causes multiple cysts to form on the ovaries, when this occurs it hinders or blocks the ovaries from shedding their linings which is what induces ovulation as well as the mentrual cycle. The problem is that without ovulation it’s impossible to conceive a child. There are other side effects from this condition that are also, at best, difficult to deal with and control.

I have dealt with problems such as being overweight, excess facial hair and severe mood swings due to hormonal imbalances. Although conceiving a child has proven difficult it is not impossible, I have been pregnant a number of times, but due to the medications required to induce my ovulation and menstrual cycle I have also suffered just as many miscarriages.

If you take nothing else away from this after reading my story please remember this; although this is difficult to deal with it’s not impossible and there is hope.

Hereditary Spherocytosis is an incurable and sometimes deadly blood disease. Hereditary Spherocytosis is a disease that is characterized by the formation of red blood cells that are abnormal or have weak cell walls causing them to lose their shape during filtering by the spleen. Normally, the red blood cells have a disc shape to them, which helps to carry oxygen to the entire body. When having this disease, the red blood cells enter the spleen as a disc but come out of the spleen completely closed as a circle. Sometimes, the spleen can completely destroy these cells. During this process, the blood is unable to carry oxygen throughout the body as well as not being able to carry toxins out of the body. Anemia, jaundice and splenomegaly can result from having this disease. Other symptoms can be a result of having Hereditary Spherocytosis. The inability to fight off infections, fatigue, and a low hemoglobin count are a few symptoms.

In 1987, this disease was almost unheard of. Now, Hereditary Spherocytosis is found in 1 out of every 5,000 people. This disease can be inherited from either parent or could have skipped generations and come from another ancestor. One of the tests that can be done to diagnose this disorder is called the Osmotic Fragility Test. Symptoms of this disease can start as early as birth or could be found later in life. Cases of this disorder can range from mild to severe. Most mild cases go untreated because the patient does not have many symptoms for a correct diagnosis. However, severe cases of this disorder can be deadly. If untreated, there is a possible risk of the spleen rupturing.

Treatment of Hereditary Spherocytosis in mild cases can be as simple as taking folic acid daily to taking an iron supplement. Newborns that have excessive bilirubin should have treatments of phototherapy, transfusions, or both. Although not recommended before six years of age, a splenectomy is also a treatment for this disorder. Not all cases that are severe result in splenectomies, though. Sometimes, patients have other underlying conditions that make this treatment plan a last resort after other treatments have been tried. Splenectomies do not cure Hereditary Spherocytosis but will allow the red blood cells to live longer and enables them to do their job in the lymphatic system.

Angina is concerned with the deposition of fat or plaques in the arteries that hinder the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart. Some people have trouble isolating discomfort that results from angina although complaints are usually associated with feelings of pressure or tightness that originate in the chest behind the breastbone and lasts for about five minutes at a time. Nausea, fatigue, shortness of breath, sweating, light-headedness, or weakness may also occur. Senior citizens have also reported pains in the shoulders, neck, jaw, and arms although women are more likely to feel this pain in the back and abdomen. While this general discomfort is most typical of stable angina, other less common forms like unstable and variant angina are usually associated with longer episodes of more severe discomfort. Unstable angina which is due to blood clotting may worsen as time progresses and eventually lead to an actual heart attack.
An important part of eldercare is monitoring any types of chest pain that seem severe, and those caring for the elderly are advised to seek medical attention immediately if this type of discomfort lasts for more than a few minutes.
Prevention and Treatment of Angina
Senior citizens and those involved in their elder care can address Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) or other heart problems with a two-fold effort aimed at prevention and treatment. Depending on the severity of the condition, In Home Care for senior citizens will generally incorporate both alleviation of pain from current heart disease and activities that will decrease risk to heart attack or other complications.
Preventing Episodes of Angina
Some preventative tips to reduce discomfort and heightened susceptibility to heart attack can include taking breaks when the onset of angina-like symptoms are felt, avoiding large meals or specific heavy foods that tend to trigger episodes of pressure or tightening in the chest, and learning techniques to avoid and/or deal with stressful situations.
Healthier living will also lower the risk for heart disease. Healthier living encompasses a wide variety of activities that focus on a healthy diet, healthy amounts of physical activity, taking medications prescribed by medical professionals, and also avoiding unhealthy activities like smoking. These could also decrease complications from related problems like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity.
Heart healthy eating involves focusing on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, and lean meats and fish. It is important for senior citizens to not only follow the recommendations mentioned above but monitor their own patterns of symptoms and work with those involved in their elder care and doctors in developing a lifestyle that is optimal for treatment and prevention of heart disease.
Treatment of Angina
Senior citizens and those involved in their elder care are encouraged to become familiar with the types of foods, activities, and daily stresses that typically lead to an onset of CAD symptoms. Many senior citizens take medications for angina and other associated symptoms of CAD, so it is also important to be aware of what each medication does as well as possible side effects that can result from long-term usage.
Avoiding strenuous physical activity or partaking in low-level activity with breaks, avoiding emotionally stressful situations, avoiding large or heavy meals, or simply being aware of your own limits can be very helpful in preventing further heart-related complications or making heart disease symptoms less severe in day to day life.
While preventative techniques are important for avoiding heart attack, it is also important to have an emergency action plan for episodes of severe symptoms that could indicate a need for immediate medical attention. Senior citizens and or any family members and friends involved in their elder care should be aware of the signs and symptoms of heart attack.
