Real People. Real Lives. True Stories.
Abnormalmedicalconditions.com is a user-driven site. We are not medical professionals. Instead, we’re people just like you. We have unusual health conditions, or complications from health problems. This website is a place to gather together and share inspirational stories, videos, and medical articles related to our health. We felt like it was important that this space exist because there are things that people who don’t have these conditions simply cannot understand.
It can be hard to talk about all the ways being sick affects our lives. It seems like nothing is left untouched. School, work, our relationships with friends and loved ones…everything changes. Goals and dreams you had all lined up may have to be radically altered, or perhaps given up altogether. These types of adjustments can take a real emotional toll on us.
Even the best, most empathetic medical professionals can’t help much. They are trained to focus on helping you manage your symptoms and get well, whatever that means in your situation. And some of the diseases and chronic conditions we live with are virtually unknown to our medical team! Which means a lot of referrals to specialists and endless rounds of appointments while you all try and find out what’s wrong.
Sometimes, even once you know what’s going on with your body, deciding what to do next can be difficult. There may be a lot of treatment options to sort through, or none at all. Often, we will find ourselves bombarded by advice from well-meaning but uninformed people who know exactly what we “should” be doing to get well, and tons of books, infomercials, and websites will sell items promising miracle cures. Having any medical condition, but especially a rare one, can make people feel like they have the right to publicly discuss our bodies and disregard our privacy.
That’s why this space is here. It’s a safe space where we can cry about the disappointment and relief . There’s room to talk about treatment options, and how people have experienced each one. So come on in, look around, and draw strength from others.
