Abnormal medical conditions that affect children are often the most heartrending. With the increase in medical technology, babies that would have never lived are being saved and going on to live productive lives. Abnormal medical conditions like anophthalmos, or small-eye syndrome, can occur. Some babies are born with tiny eyes, while others are missing eye tissue entirely. Anophthalmos is not curable, but cosmetic surgery can make the child appear more normal. Other facial deformities are also being successfully treated as well, both for increased function and cosmetic appearance. Some of these are so rare that they have no specific medical name, often being referred to only by the name of the patient who first publicized the abnormal medical condition.
