catherinfernates catherinfernates  |  Nutrition  |  Jan 30, 2012  |  32 Views  |  Read Full
If you haven't yet added guava fruit or juice to your grocery list, now might be a good time to do so. Guavas have a number of important health benefits going for them.
For one, guava contains a carotenoid called lycopene. You may have heard of lycopene in relation to tomato products. Lycopene is important for your health because it is a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants help to fight the damage caused by free radicals. This kind of damage can lead to diseases like cancer.
Guava is also high in fiber. Guava contains roughly nine grams of fiber per cup. That's a pretty hefty amount and more that most fruits offer per serving. Fiber will help to keep your digestive system healthy. Fiber moves food through your stomach into the intestines, where wastes are efficiently eliminated. Fiber can also act as an appetite suppressant. When you eat a lot of fiber with your meals, you feel fuller for longer periods of time than you do when you eat simple carbs. And, finally, fiber can help ...

Beware of Stolen Insulin

catherinfernates catherinfernates  |  Nutrition  |  Jan 26, 2012  |  45 Views  |  Read Full
Most diabetics find themselves needing to take insulin. Insulin is a hormone that controls the level of blood sugar in your body. People with diabetes don't have
enough insulin or may not be able to use it properly.
All people with type 1 diabetes, and most people with type 2, need to take insulin to help control their blood sugar levels. Type 1 diabetes means your body doesn't
make any insulin. Type 2 diabetes means your body either doesn't make enough insulin or doesn't use it
The goal of taking insulin is to keep your blood sugar level in a normal range as much as possible so you stay healthy. Over time, high blood sugar levels can cause
serious health problems, such as blindness and kidney failure.  Unfortunately, insulin can't be taken by mouth. It's usually taken as shots. It can also be taken by
pump.
If you take insulin regularly, or someone you know does, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has just issued a
serious warning: stolen vials ...

catherinfernates catherinfernates  |  Nutrition  |  Jan 24, 2012  |  31 Views  |  Read Full
By now, you've probably heard all the negative press about diabetes. How it is spreading in epidemic proportions. How people of all ages are finding themselves with the condition. And how managing diabetes is often a life-long task with some potentially serious symptoms.
So, why not do something before you end up with a full- blown case of diabetes? Go and get your blood sugar levels checked. Before people develop diabetes, they may have a condition the medical community calls "pre-diabetes."
When you have pre-diabetes, it means that your blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.
It is estimated that there are as many as 54 million pre- diabetic people in the U.S. In the pre-diabetic state, you could already suffer some long-term damage to your heart and circulatory system. But the good news is that, if you take action, you could delay or prevent Type 2 diabetes from ever happening.
You can find out if you have ...

Do Microwave Ovens Cause Cancer?

catherinfernates catherinfernates  |  Nutrition  |  Jan 12, 2012  |  31 Views  |  Read Full
Microwaves are quick, convenient and in most Canadian . But, just how safe are they?

Microwave ovens are frequently used to thaw, cook and re-heat food.  In general, microwaves, compared to conventional ovens, take only about 20% of the time to cook an item of food and use at least 20% less energy while doing so.  However, more and more, people are starting to question the safety of this commonhold item – specifically if harmful chemicals are formed during use and if the nutritional value of food cooked in a microwave is compromised.

Currently, there is no known research that has found that microwave ovens create cancer-causing substances. Additionally, studies have shown that food cooked in a microwave is just as safe as food cooked using alternative methods.  An interesting tidbit - food cooked in a microwave may also retain more vitamins, nutrients and minerals when compared to food that is boiled.

However, there are still a few potential ...

catherinfernates catherinfernates  |  Nutrition  |  Jan 10, 2012  |  22 Views  |  Read Full
The American Cancer Society is reporting that college graduates are considerably less likely than high school graduates to die from cancer.
The American Cancer Society estimates there will be almost 2 million new cancer cases in the United States this year, and of those cancer cases almost 600,000 people will die. It also notes that overall cancer death rates have been dropping in the last 10 years, but the decline has been greater for some groups more than others.
The research study says the least educated men died of cancer at rates more than 2 ½ times that of men with college degrees. For women, the numbers also suggest a widening gap.
Elizabeth Ward, who oversees research done by the American Cancer Society says, “people with college degrees are seeing a significant drop in cancer death rates, while people who have spent less time in school are seeing little improvement and sometimes none at all.”
However, Ward was quick to explain that, “just because ...
